More About Rebecca
Rebecca Hooper is a weaver from Siletz. As a weaver for over 15 years, Rebecca loves experimenting with new techniques and materials. Whether creating tapestry art or artisan doormats and baskets, she weaves every day. While searching for inspiration on weaving beach trash as art, Rebecca was inspired by famous lobster rope mats from Maine. That started her down the path of weaving with retired crab pot line sourced from commercial fishing fleets working out of the Port of Newport. Eventually the idea to weave beach trash as art was dropped because it did not represent Newport or the source of the retired fishing rope.
Each item made in the Gypsea Weaver studio is a unique piece of Newport's fishery history, supports commercial fishing fleets with an alternative to the landfill, and represents pride in Oregon's fishing culture.
Gypsea Weaver products and art can be found in Newport at Pirates Plunder, South Beach Surf Shop and The COVE Gallery in the News Times building. They are also available in Lincoln City at Ginger Roots Home in the outlet mall.
